Pope Francis points out
that Jesus was a refugee too in his preface to 'Lights on the
Ways of Hope', a collection of his teachings on migrants,
refugees and the victims of human trafficking.
"To move and set up home elsewhere to find a better life for
themselves and their families - this is the profound desire that
has moved millions of migrants over the centuries," the
Argentine pontiff said.
"The dramatic exodus of refugees is... an experience that
Jesus Christ himself went through together His parents at the
start His terrestrial life when they had to flee to Egypt to
save themselves from the homicidal fury of Herod".
The pope also argued that: "while human movements generate
challenges and suffering, they also enrich our communities, the
local churches and the society of each continent".
