Covid: another decline in new cases Central- Eastern Europe

Serbia third in Europe for vaccines administered per 100 people

(by Stefano Giantin) (ANSA) - BELGRADE, JAN 27 - Countries in Central- and Eastern Europe observed another significant decline in new coronavirus cases and deaths for the second time in a row in the week ending January 24, show data from the latest epidemiological update of the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to the WHO epidemiological update, a total of 346,439 new COVID-19 cases -17.8% compared to last week) and 13,647 new deaths (-7.7% week-on-week) were reported by the countries in the Balkans and in Central- and Eastern Europe to the World Health Organization (WHO) through January 24, bringing the cumulative total of cases to 9,647,456 and of deaths to 213,196.

According to WHO data, in the past week the countries across Central- and Eastern Europe that reported more new cases were Germany (101,418), Czechia (48,458), Poland (39,863), Ukraine (31,130), Romania (17,706), Slovakia (13,151) and Belarus (12,322).

The countries across the region that reported more new deaths last week were Germany (6,076), Poland (2,166), Czechia (1,223), Ukraine (1,035), Hungary (693), Romania (572) and Slovakia (556).

In Central- and Eastern Europe, the highest number of deaths from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic were reported in Germany (51,870), Poland (35,363), Ukraine (21,861), Romania (17,722), Czechia (16,369) and Hungary (11,968).

Slovenia remains the country in the region with the highest ratio between deaths and population, with 171 cumulative deaths per 100,000 population, compared to 141 in Italy, followed by Czechia (144) Bosnia-Herzegovina (139), North Macedonia (133), Bulgaria (127), Hungary (124) and Montenegro (122), while the lowest rate is observed in Belarus (17).

In Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania and in the Western Balkans (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Albania) 2,090,131 confirmed cumulative cases (+57,199) and 49,649 deaths (+1,783) were registered as of January 24.

According to official data collected by the portal Our World in Data, updated as of January 27, Serbia (4.5) is currently third in Europe after the United Kingdom (10.7) and Malta (4.8) for COVID-19 vaccination doses administered per 100 people. In Central- and Eastern Europe, the countries that are vaccinating at the fastest pace are Slovenia (2.77 doses per 100 people), Romania (2.75), Lithuania (2.57), Germany (2.29), Czechia (2.08) and Austria (2.06).
