Covid: Europe, highest number of deaths in Poland last week

Czechia, Hungary with most deaths in comparison with population

(by Stefano Giantin) (ANSA) - BELGRADE, APR 14 - Poland recorded almost 3,500 deaths from Covid in the week ending April 11 (+14.0%), the highest number in Europe, according to the latest epidemiological update of the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to the update, a total of 615,012 new COVID-19 cases -17.0% compared to last week) and 15,480 new deaths (+18.6% week-on-week) were reported by the countries in the Balkans and in Central- and Eastern Europe to the World Health Organization (WHO) through April 11, bringing the cumulative total of cases to 15,163,085 and of deaths to 340,991.

According to WHO data, in the past week the countries across Central- and Eastern Europe that reported more new cases were Poland (136089), Germany (112882), Ukraine (107540), Hungary (34185), Romania (32641), Czechia (28293) and Serbia (25111).

The countries across the region that reported more new deaths last week were Poland (3480), Ukraine (2681), Hungary (1702), Germany (1390), Romania (1033), Czechia (863) and Bulgaria (844). In Central- and Eastern Europe, the highest number of deaths from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic were reported in Germany (78353), Poland (58241), Ukraine (37014), Czechia (27808), Romania (25006), Hungary (23417) and Bulgaria (14351).

Czechia is the country Europe with the highest ratio between deaths and population since weeks, with 260 cumulative deaths per 100,000 population, compared to 191 in Italy. In the region, a high ratio of deaths in comparison with the population is registered also in Hungary (240), Bosnia-Herzegovina (224), Montenegro (219), Slovenia (210), Bulgaria (206) and North Macedonia (201).

In Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania and in the Western Balkans (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Albania) 3,176,618 confirmed cumulative cases (+120,690) and 72,961 total deaths (+3,500) were registered as of April 11.

According to official data collected by the portal Our World in Data, updated as of April 12, Hungary (with 43.6 doses per 100 people) and Serbia (42.3) are now fifth and sixth in Europe respectively for COVID-19 vaccination doses administered per 100 people. (ANSA).
