Covid: CEE, cases down 25.1% week on week, deaths -22.9%

Hungary, Bosnia, Czechia with highest ratio of deaths globally

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, MAY 26 - (by Stefano Giantin) All countries in Central- and Eastern Europe observed another decrease in infections and deaths in the week ending May 25, with the exception of Belarus, where a slight increase was registered, the latest epidemiological update of the World Health Organization (WHO) shows.

According to the update, a total of 162634 new COVID-19 cases -25.1% compared to last week) and 6264 new deaths (-22.9% week-on-week) were reported by the countries in the Balkans and in Central- and Eastern Europe to the World Health Organization (WHO) through May 25, bringing the cumulative total deaths to 407430.

According to WHO data, in the past week the countries across Central- and Eastern Europe that reported more new cases were Germany (55524), Ukraine (28657), Greece (13098), and Poland (11543).

The countries across the region that reported more new deaths last week were Ukraine (1293), Germany (1284) and Poland (1264).

In Central- and Eastern Europe, the highest number of deaths from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic were reported in Germany (87380), Poland (72928), Ukraine (49368), Czechia (30020), Romania (29885) and Hungary (29475).

Hungary is the country with the highest ratio between deaths and population, with 302 cumulative deaths per 100,000 population, compared to 210 in Italy. In the region, a high ratio of deaths in comparison with the population is registered also in Czechia (281), Bosnia (278), North Macedonia (254), Bulgaria (252), Montenegro (250), Slovakia (225) and Slovenia (223). Hungary, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Czechia are at the top in world for the ratio between deaths and population according to the portal Worldometer.

In Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania and in the Western Balkans (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Albania) 18568 new cases were registered in the past week. In the region there were 87372 total deaths since the beginning of the pandemic (+1202 in a week).

According to official data collected by the portal Our World in Data, updated as of May 25, Hungary (with 85.2 doses administered per 100 people) and Serbia (63.3) are fourth and seventh in Europe respectively for COVID-19 vaccination doses administered per 100 people. (ANSA).
