Covid: infections continue to drop in Central-Eastern Europe

Cases down 37% week on week, deaths -24%

(by Stefano Giantin) (ANSA) - BELGRADE, JUN 3 - Central- and Eastern Europe registered one of the lowest number of new infections since months in the week ending May 30, the latest epidemiological update of the World Health Organization (WHO) shows.

According to the update, a total of 102293 new COVID-19 cases -37.1% compared to last week) and 4738 new deaths (-24.4% week-on-week) were reported by the countries in the Balkans and in Central- and Eastern Europe to the World Health Organization (WHO) through May 30, bringing the cumulative total deaths to 412179.

According to WHO data, in the past week the countries across Central- and Eastern Europe that reported more new cases were Germany (30190), Ukraine (18951) and Greece (11466).

The countries across the region that reported more new deaths last week were Ukraine (1104), Germany (1026) and Poland (810). In Central- and Eastern Europe, the highest number of deaths from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic were reported in Germany (88406), Poland (73738) and Ukraine (50472).

Hungary is the country with the highest ratio between deaths and population since weeks, with 303 cumulative deaths per 100,000 population, compared to 211 in Italy. In the region, a high ratio of deaths in comparison with the population is registered also in Czechia (282), Bosnia-Herzegovina (281) and North Macedonia (260).

In Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania and in the Western Balkans (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Albania) 11848 new cases were registered in the past week. In the region there were 88339 total deaths since the beginning of the pandemic (+956 in a week).

According to official data collected by the portal Our World in Data, updated as of May 30, Hungary (with 90.6 doses administered per 100 people) and Serbia (66.9) are fourth and seventh in Europe respectively for COVID-19 vaccination doses administered per 100 people. (ANSA).
