Slovenia: Krsko, the only NPP in former Yugoslavia

Co-owned by Ljubljana and Zagreb, never serious incidents

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, OCTOBER 17 - The Krsko NPP, located in the southern part of Slovenia, is the sole nuclear power plant ever realized in the area of former Yugoslavia. The plant was projected in the 1970s, with the construction starting in 1975. Krsko was connected to the grid in 1981 and put into commercial operation in 1983. It is currently operated by the 'Nuklearna Elektrarna Krsko' (NEK), co-owned by Slovenia and Croatia. The Krsko nuclear power plant is equipped with a Westinghouse Pressurized Light Water Reactor of 2.000 MW thermal power and supplies electricity both to Croatia and Slovenia, delivering about 650 MW. The reactor was modernized in 2000. Three years ago, the lifetime of the nuclear power plant was extended from 2023 to 2043. No serious incidents were ever recorded during the nuclear plant operations. However, in 2008 the plant was safely shut down after a primary circuit leak. The anomaly provoked alarm in the public opinion and a considerable media coverage, but was considered not serious by the Slovenian authorities and by the International Atomic Energy Agency. (ANSA).
