Covid: in Poland +35% new deaths in a week
In area deceleration of new cases, 1 mn cumulative in Balkans

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 25 NOV - Poland, currently the country in
Central- and Eastern Europe most hit by the virus, registered a
fall in new coronavirus cases last week, but a 35% increase in
new deaths, the latest data of the weekly epidemiological update
of the World Health Organization (WHO) show. The update
confirmed that the acceleration of case incidence has slowed
down in the region, but the area observed another increase in
new deaths in the week ending November 22.
A total of 715,647 new COVID-19 cases (-0.8% compared to last week) and 12,620 new deaths (+20.5% week-on-week) were reported by the countries in the Balkans and in Central- and Eastern Europe to the World Health Organization (WHO) through November 22, bringing the cumulative total of cases to 4,809,475 and of deaths to 78,933.
The countries across the region that reported more new deaths last week were Poland (3243 vs 2409 of a week earlier), Germany (1537), Ukraine (1348), Romania (1103), Czechia (1037), Bulgaria (729), Hungary (703) and Austria (526).
"Poland reported 152 357 new cases (4026 cases per 1 million population), a 10% fall from last week. The number of new deaths has risen by 35% to 3243 new deaths (or 85 new deaths per 1 million population)," the WHO said.
In Central- and Eastern Europe, the highest number of deaths from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic were reported in Germany (14022), Poland (13288), Ukraine (10951), Romania (9916), Czechia (7095) and Hungary (3800).
Currently, North Macedonia has the highest rate of deaths per 1 million population in the region (714 against 815 in Italy), followed by Montenegro (691), Bosnia-Herzegovina (685), Czechia (663), Moldova (528) and Romania (515), while the lowest rate was recorded in Estonia (66).
According to WHO data, in the past week the countries across Central- and Eastern Europe that reported more new cases were Poland (152357), Germany (127766), Ukraine (88887), Romania (59263), Austria (42693) and Serbia (35039).
In Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania and in the Western Balkans (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Albania) 1,043,785 confirmed cumulative cases and 21,611 deaths were registered as of November 22. (ANSA).
