The ruling rightwing Brothers of
Italy (FdI) party on Friday denied reports it had filed a bill
to repeal torture as a crime saying it simply wanted to better
clarify the offence so as to safeguard police and prison
officers accused of it.
"We want to avert that fanciful charges end up with sensational
acquittals," said FdI House Whip Tommaso Foti.
He said Premier Giorgia Meloni's party "has not desire to
abrogate the crime of torture, but to characterize it in a much
clearer way, as it is in international conventions".
Leftwing Senator Ilaria Cucchi, sister of a Rome surveyor who
died of police brutality, earlier appealed to President Sergio
Mattarella not to allow the alleged bill otno the books saying
she and other campaigners had fought hard to have torture
recognized as a separate crime.
