Sharbat Gula, the 'Afghan Girl' in
photographer Steve McCurry's iconic 1985 National Geographic
magazine cover photo, has arrived in Rome from Afghanistan,
Premier Mario Draghi's office said Thursday.
The office at Palazzo Chigi noted that the photo "gained
planetary notoriety, and came to symbolize the vicissitudes and
conflicts of the historical phase that Afghanistan and its
people were going through".
The premier's office said it had organized Gula's transfer to
Italy in the wider context of the government's Afghan
evacuation, reception and integration programme.
