Covid: cased and deaths down in Central- and Eastern Europe

In Hungary record number of vaccinations

(by Stefano Giantin) (ANSA) - BELGRADE, APR 29 - New cases and deaths were decreasing in Central- and Eastern Europe in the week ending April 25, according to the latest epidemiological update of the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to the update, a total of 474,684 new COVID-19 cases -16.5% compared to last week) and 14,336 new deaths (-6.9% week-on-week) were reported by the countries in the Balkans and in Central- and Eastern Europe to the World Health Organization (WHO) through April 25, bringing the cumulative total deaths to 370,945.

According to WHO data, in the past week the countries across Central- and Eastern Europe that reported more new cases were Germany (145156), Ukraine (78761) and Poland (70831).

The countries across the region that reported more new deaths last week were Poland (3383), Ukraine (2537), Germany (1650), Hungary (1441) and Romania (1195).

In Central- and Eastern Europe, the highest number of deaths from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic were reported in Germany (81564), Poland (65415), Ukraine (42323), Czechia (28946), Romania (27267) and Hungary (26625). Hungary is now the country Europe with the highest ratio between deaths and population since weeks, with 273 cumulative deaths per 100,000 population, compared to 200 in Italy. In the region, a high ratio of deaths in comparison with the population is registered also in Czechia (270), Bosnia (251), Montenegro (231), Bulgaria (228), North Macedonia (223), Slovenia (216) and Slovakia (211).

In Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania and in the Western Balkans (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Albania) 79262 new cases in the past week and 79,522 total deaths since the beginning of the pandemic (+3,235 in a week) were registered as of April 25.

According to official data collected by the portal Our World in Data, updated as of April 28, Hungary (with 57.4 doses per 100 people) and Serbia (48.1) are fifth and sixth in Europe respectively for COVID-19 vaccination doses administered per 100 people. (ANSA).
