Covid: Poland records more than 3,000 deaths in a week
Curve reaching a plateau in Central- and Eastern Europe

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, APR 7 - Poland recorded more than 3,000
deaths from Covid in the week ending April 4, almost the same as
Italy (3,057 vs 3,068) and a 8.1% increase, while the
epidemiological curve in Central- and Eastern Europe as a whole
seems however to have reached a plateau last week, according to
the latest epidemiological update of the World Health
Organization (WHO).
According to the update, a total of 709,985 new COVID-19 cases -4.1% compared to last week) and 14,121 new deaths (+8.1% week-on-week) were reported by the countries in the Balkans and in Central- and Eastern Europe to the World Health Organization (WHO) through April 4, bringing the cumulative total of cases to 14,540,647 and of deaths to 330,065.
According to WHO data, in the past week the countries across Central- and Eastern Europe that reported more new cases were Poland (187551), Germany (112985), Ukraine (101646), Hungary (45552), Romania (38045), Czechia (36867) and Serbia (32748).
The countries across the region that reported more new deaths last week were Poland (3057), Ukraine (2379), Hungary (1532), Germany (1093), Czechia (1071) and Romania (976).
In Central- and Eastern Europe, the highest number of deaths from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic were reported in Germany (76963), Poland (59541), Ukraine (34333), Czechia (26945), Romania (23973), Hungary (21504) and Bulgaria (13507).
Czechia is the country in the region with the highest ratio between deaths and population since weeks, with 252 cumulative deaths per 100,000 population, compared to 183 in Italy, followed by Hungary (223), Slovenia (210), Montenegro (208), Bosnia-Herzegovina (207) and Bulgaria (194). In Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania and in the Western Balkans (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Albania) 3,055,068 confirmed cumulative cases (+143,673) and 69,446 total deaths (+3,239) were registered as of April 4.
According to official data collected by the portal Our World in Data, updated as of April 5, Serbia (with 38.1 doses per 100 people) is now fifth in Europe for COVID-19 vaccination doses administered per 100 people. In Central- and Eastern Europe, the countries that are vaccinating at the fastest pace are Hungary (34.3) and Estonia (22.3), against 18.6 in Italy. (ANSA).
