Serbia: 2 billion funding for lithium mining project

But protests continue against Rio Tinto

29 July, 11:13
(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JUL 29 - The British-Australian mining giant Rio Tinto has committed approximately 2 billion euro for the Jadar lithium-borates project in Serbia, a huge mining investment that should make the country one of the biggest producers of lithium in the world, the specialized portal SeeNews reported.

"We have great confidence in the Jadar project and are ready to invest, subject to approvals. Serbia and Rio Tinto will be well-positioned to capture the opportunity offered by rising demand for lithium, driven by the global energy transition and the project will strengthen our offering, particularly to the European market," the Rio Tinto CEO Jakob Stausholm said. The Jadar project will contribute 1% directly and 4% indirectly to Serbia's gross domestic product, SeeNews informed. New protest against the project, criticized by ecologist groups and citizens, have been held again in Serbia recently. (ANSA).
