(ANSA) - TRIESTE, 01 FEB - BRUSSELS - The EU Commission gave green light to 61 million euros from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to support Croatia's research and innovation.

The aim is to modernize and enlarge the Ruđer Bošković Institute (RBI) in Zagreb, with the O-ZIP project 'Open scientific infrastructure platforms for innovative applications to the economy and the society.' "Given the global challenges we are facing, it is essential to invest in European research institutes and projects to solve social problems in sectors such as health, food, and the environment," said EU Cohesion Commissioner Elisa Ferreira.

The O-ZIP project will also train a new generation of students and help the country in its smart specialization strategy while supporting the European research and innovation program Horizon 2020. (ANSA).
