-5.6% last year as a consequence of the pandemic

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, FEB 3 - The Czech Republic registered "the deepest slump in economic performance" in its recent history in 2020, the Czech Statistical Office (CSO) informed. The the gross domestic product in Czechia decreased by 5.6% in 2020, according to preliminary estimates.

"The decrease was influenced mainly by household consumption, investment expenditure and also by a slump in external demand in the first half-year," while the government expenditure was also growing in 2020, the CSO said in a statement. However, the gdp showed some signs of recovery in the last quarter of 2020. "The figures have improved thanks to the lifting of certain restrictive measures before Christmas, which allowed a growth of turnover in shops and services," said analyst Martin Gürtler, quoted by the Czech News Agency (CTK).
