(ANSA) - BRUXELLES - During a joint press point with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama in Brussels, EU Commissioner for Enlargement Johannes Hahn, announced that the preparatory work to open the EU negotiations for Albania will start "immediately in the next few days", "before the summer break".

The experts of the European Commission will begin a screening process that analyses all the political, social, legal and economic areas included in the 35 negotiating chapters provided for by Community law. The process - mandatory for every country that wants to enter the EU - will last one year and should end in time for the start of negotiations in June 2019.

"The quicker we can do this analysis, the better we can prepare for the start of official negotiations," Hahn said.

Anticipating the start of preparatory work for EU negotiations this year, Tirana "will not be losing 12 months, because we will have 12 months to be prepared for the formal opening of negotiations", said Rama, confirming the government's commitment to continue on priority reforms. "We will try to deal with public opinion, we are absolutely ready and keen to start this process," he added.

"I have no doubt that if Albania keeps this momentum on the reform agenda, the negotiations will be opened and it will become part of the EU. My hope and my wish are that the Albanian political forces work together towards the goal", commented the President of the European Council Donald Tusk.
