Some 8,500 asylum seekers rescued in
the southern Mediterranean over the last two days were arriving
in Italian ports on Tuesday, sources said. Around 5,000 of those
people were rescued off the coast of Libya on Monday alone. The
asylum seekers were aboard 14 ships, six of which have already
docked, or are about to enter, ports in Sicily and Calabria.
