Covid: CEE, 560,000 case and 11,000 new deaths

Poland third in Europe for new infections

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, MAR 17 - Countries in Central- and Eastern Europe (CEE) recorded more than 560,000 new infections and registered almost 11,000 new deaths from Covid in the week ending March 14, according to the latest epidemiological update of the World Health Organization (WHO). Poland is among the countries most negatively impacted, with 111,718 new cases in a week (+27%) and 1,893 new deaths (+25%).

According to the WHO epidemiological update, a total of 560,732 new COVID-19 cases +12.5% compared to last week) and 10,916 new deaths (+11.1% week-on-week) were reported by the countries in the Balkans and in Central- and Eastern Europe to the World Health Organization (WHO) through March 14, bringing the cumulative total of cases to 12,414,434 and of deaths to 286,389.

According to WHO data, in the past week the countries across Central- and Eastern Europe that reported more new cases were Poland (111718), Czechia (77747), Germany (69063), Ukraine (59528), Hungary (50473), Romania (30331) and Serbia (29654).

The countries across the region that reported more new deaths last week were Poland (1893), Czechia (1509), Germany (1471), Ukraine (1281), Hungary (1079), Slovakia (692) and Bulgaria (641).

In Central- and Eastern Europe, the highest number of deaths from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic were reported in Germany (73371), Poland (47178), Ukraine (28303), Czechia (23226), Romania (21439), Hungary (16952) and Bulgaria (11234).

Czechia is the country in the region with the highest ratio between deaths and population, with 217 cumulative deaths per 100,000 population, compared to 169 in Italy, followed by Slovenia (203), Montenegro (179), Hungary (175), Bosnia-Herzegovina (167), Bulgaria (161) and North Macedonia (158).

In Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania and in the Western Balkans (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Albania) 2,628,488 confirmed cumulative cases (+111,628) and 60,888 total deaths (+2,070) were registered as of March 14.

According to official data collected by the portal Our World in Data, updated as of March 15, Serbia (with 29.9 doses per 100 people) is second in Europe after the United Kingdom (38.3) and before Malta (27.7) for COVID-19 vaccination doses administered per 100 people. In Central- and Eastern Europe, the countries that are vaccinating at the fastest pace are Hungary (18.0), which is also using the Russian and Chinese jabs, Estonia (14.4), Lithuania (13.2) and Slovenia (12.4), against 11.3 in Italy.
