"At the meeting of the provincial committee for order and security on March 11, the mayor of Trieste considered the possibility of adopting an order to clear and finalize the concession of the scout camp in the village of Prosecco to equip it for the reception of migrants in the territory." Italy's Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said at the Senate question time about the situation of migrants encamped in the former silo in Trieste.
"According to reports from the Trieste police headquarters," Piantedosi added, "many migrants are no longer presenting themselves for formalizing international protection requests.
The high migratory impact determines critical issues such as that of the former silo, where migrants in an irregular position find shelter. The situation of the former silo is in constant attention of the prefecture of Trieste, which has acquired the willingness of the property to safety interventions given the planned sale of the structure in June." "According to data provided by Frontex," the minister continued, "the Balkan route was the second main route to Europe after the Mediterranean. The re-establishment of controls allowed until March 12 to reject 1,352 migrants at that border, compared to about 40 migrants readmitted to Slovenia in the same period last year." He added that the heavy overland migratory pressure in that geographic quadrant also affects the reception management in the province of Trieste. As a result, a strategy to stem the migrant flow has been implemented. In 2023, out of 2,433 transfers from Friuli Venezia Giulia, 1,788 were from the province of Trieste.
This year, out of the 685 in the region, 348 are from the province of Trieste, and just today, there was an additional transfer of 50 asylum seekers."
